Introduction

ArcMap is a powerful and widely-used Geographic Information System (GIS) software developed by Esri. In this 22nd part of our ArcGIS course, we will explore how to create a map layout and export the map for sharing or printing.

Creating a Map Layout

Once you have finished creating and organizing your map layers in ArcMap, it's time to create a map layout for presentation or printing. A map layout typically includes elements such as a map title, legend, scale bar, north arrow, and any other necessary annotations.

To create a map layout:

1. Go to the "View" menu and select "Layout View" to switch to layout mode.
2. Click on the "Insert" menu and choose "New Layout."
3. Choose a predefined page size or set a custom size for your map layout.
4. Now, you can start adding elements to your map layout using the "Insert" menu. For instance, you can add a title, legend, scale bar, and north arrow by selecting the corresponding options.
5. Arrange the elements on the layout as per your design preferences.
6. Customize the colors, fonts, and sizes of the elements to ensure a professional-looking map layout.

Exporting the Map

Once you have finalized your map layout, it's time to export the map for sharing or printing. ArcMap provides various formats for exporting your map, including image formats like JPEG and PNG, as well as PDF and AI (Adobe Illustrator) formats for vector-based outputs.

To export the map:

1. Ensure you are in the layout view by selecting "View" and then "Layout View."
2. Go to the "File" menu, then select "Export Map."
3. Choose the desired format for your exported map, such as JPEG, PNG, PDF, or AI.
4. Select the location where you want to save the exported map.
5. Adjust any additional export settings as needed.
6. Click "Save" to export the map in the selected format.
